The full name of Han Chinese consists of the first and last name. The characteristic of Chinese names is that the family name always comes first, followed by the given name. For thousands of years, the father's family name has been passed down from generation to generation. Nowadays, however, it is not uncommon for children to take their mother's last name. Generally speaking, a given name is -- one or two Chinese characters, usually carrying a parent's wish for a child. From a child's name, parents can infer what kind of person they want their child to be, or what kind of life they expect them to lead. Parents take the naming of their children very seriously, because names tend to stick with their children for life.
